When and How to Wear Black Formal Shirts

There are myriad rules and standards and traditions for how and when a gentleman should don a white dress shirt, but few such rules exist for black formal shirts. This does make a fair amount of sense. Not only are black shirts hard to match with the right-colored tuxedo or other jacket and trouser set, but they're not often cast in a strong formal light. In other words, a lot of people stick to what they know and hold themselves back from experimenting with black pieces.
